Resolution 64/292
was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 28th July 2010.
Reading
it you may or may not be surprised/shocked by the preamble's
long list of previous resolutions.
Two years' later 6th
World Water Forum took place in Marseilles. 20,000+ participants
gathered to discuss the A – Z of water with special reference to
'Time for solutions'.
In his article
Glen Pearce Oroz asked:

Water Forum: Water is a Human Right... Now what?
Next year the
Republic of Korea is going to host 7th
World Water Forum. This time the organisers hope to gather more
than 35,000 participants.
The people of Kalima
are still waiting for their UN acknowledged human right to safe
drinking water. Peasant Solidarity has the technical know-how to
provide a solution that would give them this right. All they need is
financial assistance so they can put their plan into action.
How much does it
cost to send 35,000 people to an international congress? Although I might as
well ask: How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? However I do
have a sneaking suspicion that just a tiny fraction of the cost would give them
something we take for granted:
Safe drinking water.
Until governments and international organisations get their act together desperate people will have no other option than to beg for help.
